Brooklyn-based ceramic artist, Melissa Scott crafts stardust and soil into everyday enjoyment! Inspired by the beauty in the natural world, Melissa's creations bring whimsy and joy to your morning routines.
My pottery is made from either a white, speckled white, Brooklyn red, or umbria clay. Mugs are hand-thrown and glazed with whimsy, which include NYC liberty pigeons and lovebird pairs, all hand-painted and unique. Each piece is designed for daily use - with handles fitting sweetly in your hand, each pulled uniquely, come try them out!
All food safe glazes and fired at cone 6, with an earthy warm vibe or a funky pigeon homage.
Microwave and Dishwasher-safe, but hand-washing preferred. Avoid sudden temperature shocks (no frozen-to-hot transitions).
Through my exploration of clay, a burgeoning line of jewelry evolved. These creations are individually formed by hand and mimic the geologic formations under our feet, like sandstone layers of the earth, I layer and marble the stained porcelain in a process similar to nerikomi or agateware.
Motifs include stars, moons, heart stones, daisies, and pigeons.
Jewelry is either multicolored porcelain or stoneware.
All pieces are individually formed by hand.
Layered effects are made from a marbling of multi-colored porcelain, mimicking geologic formations underground.
The finishing process is a luster fire, plating gold, silver, or mother-of-pearl onto the jewelry for extra-brilliance and joy.
Why Kettle and Kame?
Kettle and kame are unique geological formations that occur as glaciers melt and retreat. These formations of mounds and depressions marked the landscape of my childhood. My father had a deep love for rocks and geology, which inspired me to name my studio Kettle and Kame in his honor. These natural features not only populate the earth but also echo the opening of nearly every piece of wheel-thrown pottery.
