About

Melissa Scott is a Brooklyn, NY based artist who creates pottery and jewelry to bring whimsy and joy into everyday life.

Her work begins with a deep love of the earth, and the materiality of clay - an elemental material shaped by hand and transformed by fire. Whether forming a mug on the wheel or layering porcelain for jewelry, Melissa is drawn to the mesmerizing magic of the process: turning raw materials into objects meant to be held, worn, and lived with.

After attempting pottery years ago, Melissa returned to it with a new perspective - giving herself the permission to play, experiment, and create without expectation. That spirit continues to guide her work today. Each piece reflects a balance of intention and spontaneity, where no two pieces are exactly alike.

The Work

Her pottery is crafted from a range of clay bodies - white, speckled white, Brooklyn red, and umbria — and is designed for daily use. Mugs are hand-thrown, handles pulled by hand, and surfaces often feature hand-painted motifs such as pigeons, lovebirds, stars, moons, daisies, and hearts. Each piece is made to feel good in the hand and bring a small moment of delight to everyday rituals.Melissa’s work extends beyond pottery into a growing line of ceramic jewelry.

Each piece is individually formed by hand and inspired by the natural patterns of the earth. Using techniques similar to nerikomi and agate ware, she layers and marbles colored porcelain to create designs that echo sandstone, sediment, and geologic strata.

Motifs repeat across both pottery and jewelry - pigeons, stars, moons, hearts, and organic forms creating a visual language that feels both playful and grounded.

Jewelry pieces are finished with a final luster firing, adding touches of gold, silver, or mother-of-pearl for an elevation of light and brilliance.

All work is handmade, one piece at a time, and carry the marks of that process - variations that make each object uniquely its own.

Care & Use

All pottery is made with food-safe glazes and fired for durability.  Pieces are microwave and dishwasher safe, though hand washing is recommended to preserve their longevity. Avoid sudden temperature changes.

Why Kettle and Kame?

Kettle and kame are unique geological formations that occur as glaciers melt and retreat. These formations of mounds and depressions marked the landscape of my childhood. My father had a deep love for rocks and geology, which inspired me to name my studio Kettle and Kame in his honor. These natural features not only populate the earth but also echo the opening of nearly every piece of wheel-thrown pottery.
